Trail Expansion Possible with Volunteers - June 2007

During the Amo Fish Fry, Vandalia Trail organizers will be meeting with a local excavator to discuss the all-important proposed trail grading to expand the current footpath around the treatment plant. This is a key step towards allowing horseback riding and fully accommodating bicycling.

This excavator would perform the rough grading work, but a strong group of volunteers will also be needed to help prepare the final trail surface itself. This will involve a fair amount of trenching, installing geotech fabric to reinforce the trail, laying in rip rap stones to hold the fabric in place, and installing adjacent landscaping to prevent erosion nearby. Once the initial excavating is done, the follow-on work will need to be done quickly, requiring a HUGE amount of physical labor over several weekends.

---------------------------------------------------
Because we must avoid leaving the unprepared surface exposed to potential damage and erosion, excavation will not begin until we are certain that we have the manpower lined up and committed to doing whatever it will take to finish the project in a reasonable timeframe.
---------------------------------------------------

Please consider joining us for the upcoming work days and let us know when and how often you would be available starting in mid June. To help stretch the trail's current funding, anyone who is willing to bring equipment to facilitate the trenching, placing the stone, etc will be greatly appreciated!!

Many volunteer hours have created the trail that is being enjoyed right now, so we look forward to having a great response to push the Vandalia Trail to the next level of completion! Looking forward to hearing from you!
